Bike
Safety

- Always wear
a helmet every time you ride.
- Be sure
your bike is the right size for you.
- Be sure
your bike is in good condition and has the right safety accessories.
- Always follow
basic safety rules:
- Don’t
horse around; your bike is not a toy but rather a vehicle
for transportation.
- Know
and obey traffic laws and signs.
- Ride
the same direction as traffic; and single file.
- Stop
and look both ways before entering traffic.
- Use
hand signals.
- Watch
all parked cars or cars pulling out of driveways and alleys.
- Walk
bike across busy intersections.
- The law
requires that each bike have a white front reflector, two-side
wheel reflectors and a headlight visible for 500 feet. Keep reflectors
clean and replace any that are broken.
- Each bike
should have a bell or horn to alert pedestrians and other riders.
- Teach your
child to use hand signals for turning right and left, and stopping.
- right colored
(white, florescent) clothing makes bicycle riders more visible
in daylight. Children should also wear retro-reflective clothing
or material especially on their ankles, wrists, back and helmet.
- It is recommended
that young children not be allowed to ride their bikes at night.
If your child is out after dark, remind him or her to phone home
for a ride or walk his or her bike home, on the sidewalk or away
from the street.
Take
a few moments and go through the Bike Safety Kit document -- it
has lots of information on bike safety (see Bike Safety Kit page
