Child
Passenger Safety
With
over 100 NHTSA certified Child Passenger Safety (CPS) Technicians
trained and three certified CPS instructors in El Paso County, DRIVE
SMART Colorado Springs is able to place a large focus on child/youth traffic safety.
- DRIVE SMART,
along with alliance members from the Colorado Springs Safe Kids, military bases, law enforcement agencies, health and
emergency medical personnel and the business community conduct
an average of 20 community-wide safety seat clinics annually throughout
the greater Colorado Springs region, checking nearly 700 seats,
with an average misuse is 93%.
- Buckle Bear
the puppet visits an average of 5 – 10 preschool classrooms
annually, getting the buckle-up message to area youngsters.
- DRIVE SMART
gives presentations to elementary school children about pedestrian,
bike and bus safety.
- Vince and
Larry costumes are lent to various organizations each year. As
an example, the costumes have been loaned out to Peterson Air
Force Base and Schriever Air Force Base frequently, in addition
to visiting the YMCA family days and other community events.
- Upon request,
volunteers from DRIVE SMART will give presentations to organizations
upon request such as “parents of pre-schoolers” and
MOPS groups on child safety seats, from infant to booster seats.
